Finding A New Home
Tom and Diane were living in a tent with their 12-year-old son Logan, just five feet from train tracks.
“We were moving from Nevada when our RV broke down,” Tom explains. “We lost work tools, food, clothing, Logan’s toys, everything. We went through some trials and tribulations after that and finally ended up in a tent.”
The train authorities informed them they couldn’t stay there; it was dangerous being so close to the tracks. When Tom and Diane explained they were unable to find shelter, the officers called Rapid Response on their behalf. It took four hours of calls to find them a place to stay.
They spent three weeks in a motel, then moved into My Father’s House just after Christmas: December 29, 2023.
“Being homeless was a big mental strain,” Tom recalls. “I couldn’t protect my wife and son. We had to look for public restrooms to use. It was filthy. Horrible.”
Logan adds that living by the train tracks wasn’t good. The trains went by every few minutes and he couldn’t get much sleep, making going to school each morning really difficult.
All Diane could think was they never should’ve left Nevada.
Now, the family believes it was part of God’s plan. Since coming to MFH, they are closer as a family and closer to the Lord. “Everything happens for a reason,” says Diana with assurance.
“It’s a comfort to be there. They pray for each other and pray for you.”
Diane and Tom have been able to reduce their debt while at My Father’s House, learning the value of living on a budget and putting money in savings in case of a crisis. When Diane needed brain surgery and was unable to work, they had the funds they’d saved in their MFH Family Fund to fall back on.
Tom and Diane want people to know there are families struggling, trying to do the right thing. They want a hand up, not a handout. MFH offers the accountability and education they need.
“The staff are so caring and understanding. They help you change your outlook. We were a mess, but we are very different people now.”
